The Skin Sim app provides free simulations of indoor drying stresses on skin.

Who is this for?

  • People who have dry-skin conditions that are triggered by seasonal changes in the weather,
  • Skin-care professionals such as dermatologists and estheticians who should be aware of the seasonal changes in drying stresses that their clients are exposed to, and
  • Staff at companies that sell moisturizers and humidifiers to help people hydrate their skin.

What will you learn?

The Dry Skin Index (DSI) represents dermal stresses caused by changes in indoor temperature and humidity. Skin Sim provides an entire year of daily DSI values for the year 2020 so that you can see the kinds of trends that can occur at a reference house where you live.

How would you alter your skin-care practices to deal with changes in such dermal stresses?

What should you do?

The app shows the numbers of days that exceed DSI levels of 4, 5, and 6. This summary provides an indication of just how much time someone might have to spend hydrating at-risk skin.

If your skin is susceptible to dehydration and a significant number of days are above the “action” levels, you may want to consider getting a DSI Sense that continually monitors indoor drying stresses.
